Koh Samui
OK, this is going to be very brief. We spent 1 day (but 2 nights) on Koh Samui, and after the delights Pha Ngan, we were completely not enamoured with the place at all.
It was so commercial, the weather wasn’t great and after driving around on a moped for the day, we really didn’t find a great deal that interested us. So little that we took only a handful of pictures (and anyone that knows what we are like with cameras, will know that that is very unlike us!!!).
Journey to Hat Yai (Southern Thailand)
We managed to find a very cheap bus company (480Baht or £9.50) that would take us all the way from Koh Samui island to the south of Thailand where we would meet our train to Malaysia.
We met the coach at Nathon Pier, but pretty much got off of it straight away to get on the car ferry for 2 and a half hours to get to the main land!
Once on the mainland, it took another 7 hours on the coach. The countryside was amazing. But we also went through totally untouristy towns, so we got to see what real life looks like without us westerners, but only at a glimpse.
Hat Yai is a portal for shopping! Its a random city, in the middle of nowhere, with nothing to do but shop and eat. So thats what we did for the 12 hours between transport! We had an overnight stay in a basic hotel too, but that was all part and parcel of the long commute south apparently!
Journey to Kuala Lumpur (overnight train)
We were so lucky with our train. We had prebooked the tickets online at a hefty £8.50 and printed off our E-tickets. The ticket said the train left at 15.20. We had nothing to do that afternoon, so got to the station early! Only to discover that 15.20 was Malay time and we had to take away an hour for Thai time. So 14.20 was our departure, so if it had not of been for our boredom, we would have missed our train and missed New Year in KL!!!
The train was as standard. However all the beds were already made up and we had upper bunks, so it meant we had to lie down or stand up for the whole journey.
We crossed into Malaysia at Pedang Besar station, randomly got off the train, through Immigration and Customs and back on the same train again!?!? Strange!
And from there, it was across country to KL! As we were on the west coast of Malaysia, the views over rocky mountain formations and vast farmlands was amazing, especially when the sun started to set.
Mummy and Daddy Feast, I hate to admit it, but the sunsets in Malaysia actually beat that of Pagham! Yes, seriously! I know this statement will cause uproar, but come to Malaysia, and I will prove it :)
And so the sunset, and it was time to fall asleep, in time for the adventures to begin in KL!
xx
